Bake Down the Walls!

Hi, I’m Kristen. I’m a twenty-something southern girl, tried and true… born in Louisiana, and raised in Houston, Texas. I currently reside in Austin, with my kitten, Milo. I went vegan in April of 2008, after being Vegetarian for 4 years. One of my favorite things to do in the kitchen is “veganize” popular foods and my favorite non-vegan dishes. I try to incorporate southern comfort foods that bring back fond memories and present them with a modern twist. I have a not-so-secret love affair with Donuts.
I graduated from Austin Community College in May of 2011, where I studied Baking and Pastry Arts. I also won 1st place in the Austin Cake Show (Feb 2011) for the vegan tasting category! My dream is to own a vegan bakery, and I’m currently working towards that. Until then, I’m busy testing recipes, and working as a Baker. My work experience includes bakeries such as Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, and Hey, Cupcake! The purpose of this blog is to showcase my progress as I learn and build skills as a vegan chef-in-training.
Outside of the kitchen, I am one of the organizers for Texas VegFest, which is an annual event held in Austin that promotes and celebrates plant-based diets and cruelty-free lifestyles for a healthier, more sustainable future. You can usually find me at most Vegans Rock Austin events, and I try to participate in every local bakesale under the sun.

Punk rock is a huge inspiration for me. Veganism is my form of personal activism. I am vegan most importantly for animal rights, but I also believe there are major health and environmental benefits of a whole foods, plant based diet.
